Daycock

Henry Robert Fraser Daycock was born on 27th July 1908 in Bethnal Green, the youngest son of George Fraser Daycock a successful sawdust dealer in the area who started a cycle business in 1911. Sometime after WW1 Harry and elder brother George ran a bike shop at 41 St Stephens Road, Bow, where Harry became the frame builder

In 1931 Harry opened his own shop at 255 Green Street, Bethnal Green, where he remained until the mid 1960’s when he moved to a new shop nearby at 201-203 Roman Road. The shop was situated under a block of flats and his brazing hearth was seen as a fire risk.  Despite being prevented from building frames he nevertheless remained in business at this address until the early 1980s when he sold the shop and retired

Harry died in Worthing in 1993. Several shops carried the Daycock name until recently, and the shop in Roman Road finally closed it’s doors in 2019.
