SOMEC
The Societa Mechanica (Society of Mechanics) was set up by Giro d'Italia mechanic Oliviero Gallegati in the late 1960s, in order to set a group of working standards.
In 1973 he opened his small artisanal shop to manufacture custom build cycles in Lugo near Bologna, Italy, Rather than following the almost universal custom in the Italian cycle industry of naming the company after himself, he instead named it SOMEC, for SOcieta MEChanica.
In the beginning the bikes were sold to local cyclists but with increased exposure at international bike shows, SOMEC received orders from many foreign customers fascinated with the work of SOMEC’s superbly skilled artisans.
Today SOMEC is a large and successful racing cycle business still based in Lugo
