Cicli Artigianali
Cycle Club of London
Martelly
In 1930s Arthur Maertens, an ex professional rider from the pre WW1 era opened a bike shop near Oudenaarde Belgium. In 1946 Arthur changed his name to Martens and was joined by his son and from then until the 1980s Martens Cycles built thousands of frames for many pro riders and teams.
In the mid 1980s Arthur’s grandson Eddy Martens took over the business and changed it’s name to Martelly to probably mimic the Belgium fashion for Italian sounding cycle businesses. They began making frames for pro teams like ASFRA Flanders, Flandria, Splendor, Sigma, Safir and Boston.
Most of the Team Flanders frames were made with Vitus tubes with better frames having ‘crimped’ main tubes like the Colnago Master frames of the day.
The business is still going today in Zwevezele near Oudenaarde
